Skin Cancer Q & A

What is skin cancer?

At Rajan Dermatology, you’ll find a team of dermatologists dedicated to helping you prevent and identify each kind of skin cancer.

The three most common types are melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Here’s what you should watch out for with each type.

Melanoma

This type of skin cancer can appear anywhere, even on skin that isn’t usually exposed to the sun. It usually looks like:

  • Moles that change shapes or sizes
  • Moles that bleed
  • Brown patches with dark speckles
  • Lesions that itch, burn, or appear white, pink, red, blue, or blue-black

Basal cell carcinoma

Most commonly appearing on areas of skin that have been exposed to the sun, this type of skin cancer usually exhibits as:

  • A bump with a waxy-looking surface
  • A lesion that’s flat and flesh-colored or brown and may look similar to a scar
  • A sore that bleeds, scabs, heals, then returns

Squamous cell carcinoma

This type of skin cancer, usually appearing on sun-exposed areas, usually looks like a scaly lesion or a firm, red bump.

What can I do to prevent skin cancer?

Skin cancer is caused by the skin’s exposure to UV rays, so the best thing you can do to prevent skin cancer is to practice sun safety by minimizing sun exposure and wearing sunscreen.

Be proactive about your skin’s health and watch for any of the warning signs listed above and coming to Rajan Dermatology for an annual skin cancer screening. The team of expert dermatologists can assess any moles, bumps, or other risk factors.

Should any issues arise, Rajan Dermatology, also offers skin cancer treatment.

How is skin cancer treated?

If you’re diagnosed with skin cancer, don’t worry. Dr. Rajan and her team will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will be effective for your specific type of skin cancer and its progression in your body.

At Rajan Dermatology, Dr. Rajan and her team offer superficial radiation therapy with the SRT-100™ from Sensus Healthcare. This treatment is FDA-cleared for non-melanoma skin cancer and keloids.

The SRT-100 delivers a low dose of radiation therapy right into the targeted skin cells, killing squamous or basal skin cancer cells while keeping the surrounding skin healthy. The treatment is virtually pain-free and Dr. Rajan performs it from the comfort of her office.
